Leta is originally from Arlington, Virginia and now resides in Virginia Beach with her two children. She first ventured to the Hampton Roads area to attend ODU, where she graduated in 1994 with a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice. Leta then worked as a paralegal for several years in the D.C. area and Virginia Beach, then as a Master Police Officer for 20 years. During her law enforcement career, she worked as a street officer, detective, school resource officer, and crime prevention specialist. In 2016, Leta had to retire due to an injury she sustained. She wanted to continue to keep people safe, and now runs her own business teaching self-defense and personal safety classes. Leta’s son, David, has achondroplasia, a form of skeletal dysplasia. She has dedicated her time advocating for her son, navigating the EDCD waiver process, and serving two terms as President of Little People of America to support him and other families and individuals with dwarfism.
